Beauvoir...

When I look back at my high school days, I remember history class being the absolute worst class I had to attend. Bleh...I hated history. My mom and dad, however, are both history lovers. I, too, love history. I know, contradicting, right? Well, I should recommend to the state board of education that students should have a field trip to go with every lesson they have in history. Ha! When I was a kid, we vacationed to various sites and places. You know the little brown signs on the roadside noting 'historical marker ahead'? Well, those, to my parents were like commandments to them...we couldn't pass one up. :0) We always made a point to visit that site, which kinda bit my parents in the hiney sometimes after driving miles out of the way to see a stump Davey Crocket had rested on [dramatization], but we nevertheless, always had fun. It always seemed that we learned something on the trip. I mean, we did visit Dogpatch USA and things like that, but we all had fun learning something about our past. My favorite visits being Old Washington in Arkansas and seeing Abe Lincoln's cabin (which he was born in) in Kentucky. More times than not, it is good practice to take your children on an outing where they will learn something. Alright, so on to my story. The last time my parents were down for a visit, my dad was set on visiting Beauvoir, the Jefferson Davis home in Biloxi. Unfortunately, we weren't able to make it for a visit, but oh the joy when my parents returned for another visit. Everyday he said "Now, I want to go visit the Jeff Davis home." So...we did. On Friday, we made our way to Biloxi to see Beauvoir. This is the part of history I love. I just can't get in to history while sitting in a classroom listening to a monotone coach ramble on and on...yadda yadda yadda...yadda yadda yadda. Yeah...interesting, right? I love seeing history. So...here it is...Beauvoir. Right on the Gulf Coast. I apologize before hand...goofy me...I didn't take any pictures of the house while we were there. We aren't far from there, I'll snap a few pictures when we go by there again...sorry. :0(

The sign reads:

BEAUVOIR

Built 1852-4. Last home of

Jefferson Davis, U.S. Senator,

Congressman, Secretary of

War, and only President of

Confederacy. Beauvoir served

as a Confederate Veterans'

home from 1903 until 1956.

Jeff Davis' grandfather's grandfather clock. I think the tour guide said this was from the 1780s. The clock was just brought back to the home last week from its restoration. It was slightly damaged in Hurricane Katrina, but it is keeping perfect time. It dinged on the hour and I looked down...1:00 pm. Perfect. They offered to give the clock to me, but being the sweet person I am, I declined. Wasn't that nice?
*I just read on the site that this clock was bought for $75.oo in 1783. This amount now converts to about $35,000.00*

The Davis' piano. This was also offered to me as a gift, but I already have a piano, so I declined. :0)

This is the buffett like table in the front room. It ONLY weighs about 650 lbs. However, Katrina's waters did move it towards the back of the house. It took seven strong men to move it back in place. It is gorgeous!

The library parlor. The bookcase in the corner was one of four; one in each corner. Installed at Jeff Davis' request. Love the chase lounge.

The daughter's bedroom. This bed (an entire suit) was given to her as a wedding gift from her parents and she returned it to them when they purchased the home.

This is the guest bedroom. Its not near as nice as my guest bedroom, but its pretty. Ha!

This is the pattern of the glass in the doors. The front and rear doors (double doors about 7 feet tall) all have this glass patterning. I love it!

I suggest if you are ever in the area to visit this home. It is really beautiful. :0)
